(KTVI) - At least three St. Louis-area GameStop locations have closed doors this month as the retailer reportedly faces a wave of closures nationwide to start the new year.
FOX 2 has learned that the following locations have closed doors this month:
- St. Peters, Missouri (7094 Mexico Road)
- Collinsville, Illinois (1120 Collinsville Crossing)
- Glen Carbon, Illinois (3022 S. State Rt. 159)
All three locations show up as "permanently closed" upon Google search, while GameStop's website lists each of those locations as "closed" over each of the seven days per week. Phone lines for each of those three have also gone unanswered.
FOX 2's efforts to reach out to GameStop for comment on these closures were unsuccessful, and the company has not publicly acknowledged closures this year.
However, according to documents filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2024, the company has initiated a "comprehensive store portfolio optimization review, which involves identifying stores for closure based on many factors, including an evaluation of current market conditions and individual store performance."
For many years, GameStop has thrived as a brick-and-mortar hub for gaming enthusiasts, where customers could purchase games, consoles, and accessories, along with exclusive pre-orders. However, with the rise in digital downloads since the COVID-19 pandemic, the company appears to be challenged by an evolving market.
According to a blog page tracking closed locations, based on information off of GameStop's website store locator, several other locations in Missouri and Illinois have closed or are expected to close in the upcoming weeks.
