Cold air returns; significant winter storm shaping up for the weekend
A winter storm system is expected to bring significant snow and ice across Missouri and Illinois, with the potential for significant snow north of metro St. Louis and a significant ice storm farther south.
ST. LOUIS - Cloudy and breezy to start Wednesday and the New Year. We’ll see some clearing later in the day, with top temperatures in the upper 30s. Skies start mostly clear this evening, but clouds return in the early morning hours of Thursday.
Wake up temperatures on Thursday in the upper 20s. Cloudy with highs near 40 on Thursday.
A small storm system will move across Missouri and Illinois late Thursday. This will likely bring some snow closer to the Missouri and Iowa border. Further south, precipitation chances get lower. Let’s watch for a rain or rain and snow mix late Thursday afternoon and evening, mainly along and north of I-70. Some areas could see dusting on grassy surfaces Thursday night.
Quiet and cold Friday and Saturday with highs close to freezing.
A significant winter storm system arrives late Saturday night and continues Sunday and into Monday. The entire viewing area will be impacted, but the exact path and timing of the storms are still in flux. As of now, St. Louis has the potential for significant snow north of metro St. Louis and a significant ice storm farther south.
Right now, the metro St. Louis area is right on the line between the two. This storm is still way out over the Pacific, and we will be continually updating the forecast with the latest information.
However, this may have significant impacts on post-holiday, back-to-school Monday.
