Aurora man charged after alleged suicide by cop attempt

KSNF/KODE — Charges are filed against the Aurora man who police say tried to commit suicide by cop on Sunday.

Jeffrey Nelson, 57, is charged with four counts of first-degree assault with special victims — that's the charge when police officers are considered the victims — two weapons charges, and making a terrorist threat.

The probable cause affidavit says Nelson entered the Aurora-Marionville Police and Fire Facility Sunday evening armed with a loaded handgun in an intoxicated state.

Police Chief Wes Coatney says they believe Nelson was trying to commit suicide by cop, and because officers had interactions with him earlier that day, they knew he was in mental distress.

According to Coatney, his officers made the decision not to shoot Nelson because they were behind bullet-proof glass and believed they could de-escalate the situation.

Nelson was apprehended and transported to a secure mental health facility.

Coatney says they will arrest Nelson once he's released from the hospital.
