ST. PETERS, Mo. - The St. Peters Police Department acknowledged on Saturday that it is aware of an arson case in Puerto Rico that is allegedly linked to a local resident through several social media posts.

A spokesperson with the department tells FOX 2 that authorities in Puerto Rico are leading the investigation into the arson. While the St. Peters Police Department has been in contact with Puerto Rican law enforcement, they have not been asked to assist in any way as of Saturday.

According to reports from Puerto Rican news outlets, a tourist allegedly vandalized and set fire to a hotel's restaurant area on Thursday, prompting guest evacuations. Three establishments were reportedly targeted, with one owner accusing a woman of pouring gasoline in front of a restaurant and setting it on fire.

A report from Puerto Rico news outlet Metro.Pr has not confirmed any information about arrests, warrants, or pending charges in this case.

Meanwhile, the St. Peters Police Department says it was made aware of an alleged arson case that allegedly involved a St. Peters resident through social media posts. St. Peters police were not able to confirm time and location information about the case allegedly linked to the resident with FOX 2.

"It is important to note, this alleged crime occurred in Puerto Rico; therefore, the St. Peters Police Department does not have any independent authority in this investigation. Our department will assist Puerto Rican authorities if it is requested," said the department in a statement on Saturday.

For now, the case allegedly linked to a St. Peters resident is being investigated by state and national police in Puerto Rico.
