Do you know what the deadliest weather event is? It's probably not what you're thinking. Not tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, or flooding. Statistically the deadliest weather event is extreme temperatures. Over the coming days, get ready as we will be facing brutal cold weather.
Today will be our transition day. It won't be warm. However, it will be the warmest we will experience over the next few days. Temperatures will attempt to warm to the freezing mark, but mostly likely land short in Springfield.
Breezy winds from the northwest will keep the feels-like forecast trapped into the teens for the majority of the day.
I am forecasting Sunday to be the coldest day out of this stretch. Highs will not warm outside of the teens with overnight low temperatures you could count on one hand. Wind chill will fall between -10 and 5 degrees.
A pinch warmer for Monday. Only slightly, but any bit helps. Highs will fall between the upper teens and lower 20s for most locations. Single-digit lows will occur again on Monday night.
I am not expecting us to get warmer than freezing until Wednesday. We have issued Weather Aware days for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Please during this stretch of extreme cold keep an eye out for your neighbors, the elderly, pets, and livestock.
For the kids wanting another snow day, it won't be happening this week and the weather will be staying cold and dry. Both rain and snow chances are looking close to zero for this week.
