New animal services facility in Belleville breaks ground

BELLEVILLE, Ill - Construction is just beginning for the Public Building Commission of St. Clair County for the $8.8 million new Animal Services Facility.

Located at 1123 Comwest Parkway in Belleville, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held Thursday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. Funds from the PBC and the American Recovery Plan Act will finance the construction.

The existing Animal Services Facility flooded July of 2024, which required emergency evacuations. The new eight-acre site will be removed from possible flooding and is easily accessible to the community from IL Rt 15 off 74th St. in Belleville.

100 animals can be housed at the larger site, and it is designed with the latest public animal care facility standards. This includes more humane treatment in a fear-free environment. The daily operations focus on a healthy, liveable environment for animals, staff, and volunteers.

A more positive adoptive experience for both prospective owners and adoptable animals is among the main focuses. Designated spaces for training, clinics, and engagement opportunities are also featured.

The new facility is being constructed by Wright Construction Services, Inc of St. Peters, Missouri. The architext of record is Woolpert of Fairview Heights.
