The Missouri Board of Pharmacies has introduced new requirements for pharmacies mailing or shipping prescription medications.
Under the rule that is now in effect, pharmacies are to have written policies notifying patients of shipments, using proper packaging, handling complaints, maintaining temperature requirements for drugs, and managing medication transport conditions.
The pharmacies are also to alert patients before shipping medications and provide notifications of each shipment, which include instructions on how to detect damaged medications and reporting issues.
However, there are some exemptions to the new requirements – they include orders that are delivered by pharmacy staff, in addition to shipping to long-term care centers.
The rules went into effect on December 30th.
