WYANDOTTE, Okla. - A Wyandotte K-9 was laid to rest after a long battle with spinal problems.
The police dog had a couple of spinal surgeries and never fully recovered, said Wyandotte Police Chief Ronnie Gilmore.
The announcement was released on social media.
Throughout his career, Niko made numerous appearances at schools, children's events, and random meet-and-greet events.
In December 2018, Niko was used to track an endangered elderly male who left his house in freezing temperatures. Niko tracked him approximately 100 to 200 yards to a yard up the street and located him lying in a yard, unresponsive, dressed only in his underwear, said Jacob Hamblett, K9 Handler/DEA Task Force Officer.
This remains the most important find of his career, he said.
Nico was involved in 247 deployments. During his watch, he seized over 27 pounds of marijuana, over 13 pounds of methamphetamine, 15 grams of cocaine, almost 300 grams of heroin, and 1.3 pounds of Fentanyl. He also seized over $1.3 million in currency - criminal proceeds. He was involved in 225 arrests and 118 arrests with other agencies.
