Early clouds (and some snow flurries) exited off to the east Wednesday afternoon. A bright afternoon didn't put much of a dent in the cold with afternoon highs only in the 20s. We've gone a full 72 hours now with temperatures below freezing.
Clear and cold again tonight with temperatures slipping into the teens. We'll enjoy some sun early Thursday, but clouds will quickly move in. As for getting above freezing, it will be a race against the clouds. The faster clouds thicken up, the less likely we can top freezing. Right now, it looks like we'll get enough morning sunshine along with southwest winds to get us into the mid-30s Thursday afternoon.
A southern winter storm threat will hit areas from Texas through the South Thursday through Friday. The Ozarks will be on the northern edge of this snow threat. Snow accumulations in Missouri may have to battle drier air, cutting into overall snow amounts north of the state line. Areas south of the state line are still expected to get blanketed with heavier totals. A general 1 to 3" is expected north of the state line with 3 to as much as 5" across Northern Arkansas.
Confidence is high that any snow that does fall will accumulate easily. Snow-covered roads are likely Friday morning. Temperatures won't warm much with highs near freezing. Roads will probably become slushy before refreezing again Friday night.
This will be a much more impactful storm to the south across Arkansas and into other parts of the South. Amounts will be greater and resources to deal with snow and sleet on roads are much more scarce. This will make travel inadvisable late Thursday into the weekend across Arkansas into North Texas and east into Mississippi.
The weekend will offer sunshine, highs above freezing, and an opportunity to melt off snow.
