(KTVI) - Small towns can offer a refreshing escape from the hustle of everyday life. Two small towns in Missouri and northern Arkansas recently earned national recognition as standout destinations.

Home improvement TV network HGTV recently unveiled its list of the "50 of the most charming small towns in America," spotlighting one quaint town from each U.S. state.

The selections were based on factors like restaurants, shopping, fascinating histories, family-friendly attractions, and natural beauty.

According to the list, HGTV named Hannibal, Missouri, as the most charming small town in the Show Me State and Eureka Springs, Arkansas, as the most charming small town in the Natural State.

HGTV praised Hannibal for its vibrant shops, museums, and riverboat rides on the Mississippi River. As the hometown of renowned author Mark Twain, it draws visitors year-round, especially for events like Tom Sawyer Days and the Big River Steampunk Festival.

Eureka Springs, nestled right in the Ozarks, was praised by HGTV for its historic downtown area, featuring tons of art galleries and shops. HGTV also notes that the town was one of the 12 towns that are part of the "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

For those eager to visit, Hannibal is roughly 240 miles and less than a four-hour drive away from Springfield, while Eureka Springs is only about 80 miles and a 1 hour, 45-minute drive away from Springfield.

Dubbing these small towns as hidden gems, HGTV said, "Whether it's the simplicity, the character, or the people, they are a quintessential part of American life."

Other small towns in nearby states on the list include Alton, Illinois; Lindsborg, Kansas; Medicine Park, Oklahoma; Paducah, Kentucky; and Paris, Tennessee.
