ST. LOUIS - Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by an off-duty officer while armed outside a downtown St. Louis bar during a brawl on New Year's Day.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports that Kobie Davis, 25, of Urbana, Illinois, died in the shooting.
SLMPD officials previously told FOX 2 that multiple officers from other jurisdictions were working security at The Wheelhouse bar for New Year's Eve. Police say, at some point, people who were inside the bar went outside into the streets for a fight.
SLMPD officials say an off-duty officer from the Leadington (Missouri) Police Department, who was working security for the event, shot and killed Davis.
Davis refused to drop his weapon when asked, and in response, the officer shot him in the chest, according to SLMPD. A second person was grazed by a bullet. The officer was not injured.
SLMPD reports that the off-duty officer involved has 18 years of law enforcement experience. FOX 2 has since learned that officer is on leave from the Leadington Police Department.
The Force Investigation Unit with SLMPD, which handles officer-involved shooting within city limits, is leading the investigation.
