ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – Police arrested one man after a brawl broke out at an amateur boxing showcase over the weekend in St. Charles.
The showcase was held at the Boys & Girls Club of St. Charles Saturday night.
St. Charles Police say 46-year-old Samuel Thompson Jr. was arrested and charged with interfering with law enforcement and resisting arrest. Thompson is thought to have instigated the brawl.
The group that hosted the event, Box Culture Midwest, rented the venue. They issued the following statement:
Box Culture Midwest has proudly hosted over 40 amateur boxing events, featuring over 200 of the top amateur fighters and future world champions from the Saint Louis and Midwest region. During this time, we have maintained an unblemished record of professionalism and sportsmanship, with not one punch being thrown outside the ring. This is a testament to the respect and discipline that define our boxers and events and staff.
Boxing is a sport fueled by high emotions, where passion runs deep for athletes, families, and fans alike. Unfortunately, at our most recent event, the actions of one individual caused a ripple effect, casting a shadow on what was otherwise a fantastic showcase of local talent and spirited competition.
This behavior is not reflective of the values of Box Culture Midwest or the boxing community we work tirelessly to build. We have taken direct steps to address the situation with those involved, ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and professional environment where athletes can shine, families can celebrate, and the love for boxing can continue to thrive. We thank our supporters, fighters, and fans for their continued trust in us as we uphold the high standards that define our brand centered on showcasing and providing opportunities for the next generation of great Saint Louis boxers.
