Nixa prepares for second round of winter weather

NIXA, Mo. - The City of Nixa is another community in the Ozarks preparing for yet another snowing. Superintendent of Streets Jeff Roussell says his crews are as prepared as they can get, all they can do now is wait.

"I have staff on standby ready to go at a moment's notice. So, we're as prepared as we can be right now," says Roussell

The City of Nixa has 13 snowplows, Roussell explained to Ozarksfirst that it is important to make sure there is enough snow on the ground before the trucks are used.

"You want it to accumulate to a point where you're not wearing your equipment without any benefits from it. And so, when you have those smaller amounts or ice accumulations or things like that, we try to go at it simply with salt," says Roussell.

Resident in Nixa are also getting ready for the incoming weather. Kelly Choate at Nixa Hardware says staff has made sure they're ready for anything.

"It's hard to predict the weather, even the weather man can't do it. So, you do the best you can. We've gone through a lot of zero ice and ice melt and salt combinations over the last couple of days," says Choate, who assured the public that Nixa Hardware will be open tomorrow.

Crews in Nixa have already pre-treated the roads according to Roussell. He says throughout the night he will personally monitor the roads, looking for the perfect time to send out trucks.

"I'll start watching for an accumulative amount of snow that would dictate that we need to get out and start plowing," says Roussell. "I'll actually call the guys before we get to that amount of snow that needs to be pushed to allow them time to get here and things like that."

Roussell says his best advice to drivers is just to stay home, but if you have to get out you should take extra supplies like kitty litter and water.
