NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — A project set to launch this year could make Newton County drivers safer.
The county's broadband expansion will include a public safety component—specifically installing flood sensors at low-water crossings on nine roads in the county. These sensors will warn drivers when water levels rise, aiming to prevent cars from entering dangerous situations.
Another related project will focus on helping older residents become more comfortable with technology.
"A lot of them are fearful. You know, they have a cell phone. The literacy is a challenge there. And you know, if we provide this to the home, to get the benefit and to understand what it can do for them," said Alan Cook, former Newton County commissioner.
The county will partner with the Area Agency on Aging to host digital skills training classes. These will begin with seniors but could expand to other age groups as needed.
