Mothers Against Drunk Driving warns of New Year's Eve DUI risks

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. – As many are getting ready to ring in the new year, the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving is working to warn everyone of the dangers of driving under the influence.

Deborah Winston says her life was forever changed on May 11, 2011, when her 29-year-old son David was killed by a drunk driver—two days after Mother’s Day and three days before his 30th birthday.

“It was not a holiday. It was a Wednesday afternoon about three o’clock. It’s not just about the holidays—it’s every day that people need to be aware,” Weinstein said.

Ever since her son’s death, she has been on a mission to speak out for the Mothers Against Drunk Driving organization, raising awareness.

“We want to bring awareness to the community that New Year's Eve can be one of the most dangerous days for people drinking....we are just here as a reminder that if you’re going to drink and party tonight, you need to make a plan to get a driver or Uber. We want you to be safe,” she said.

MADD joined Waterway Car Wash on New Year’s Eve for its 23rd annual fundraiser across St. Louis locations. The money donated goes towards helping victims of drunk driving and supporting the group’s education programs.

“I became involved with MADD because I needed a purpose; I needed to let people know that when you drink and drive, you are putting people in danger. I didn't want any other person or any other families to go through what my family went through,” Weinstein said.

MADD handed out hundreds of red ribbons as a symbol of commitment to preventing impaired driving.
