Joplin’s second “Council in the Park” held indoors

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin city leaders are trying to make it easier to connect with residents.

To do that, the city held an event called “Council in the Park." It's the second one of its kind. The first was held in Ewert park back in October. This one took place in Schifferdecker Park. Because of the cold weather, it was held indoors at the Joplin History and Mineral Museum.

The informal sessions are designed for members of the community, where they're encouraged to meet council members, ask questions, present ideas, and voice any concerns they may have.

It also gives them the opportunity to learn more about city government. No city business or voting takes place during the gatherings.

"I really applaud the city council for taking those steps so that we don't lose that connection to the citizens we serve, and I'm excited to see the wonderful ideas and discussions that are present here,” said Joplin City Manager, Nick Edwards.

"It's for people that prefer to have a more informal setting. I just think some people are intimidated by the meetings, or the meetings run long, and people don't have that kind of time, so this is a short way for people to come and visit with us on a more informal basis,” said Joplin Councilmember, Doris Carlin.

"It has been talked about in the past as far as, we're not reachable so to speak, so I think this is an opportunity for the community to come and see us one-on-one, shake our hand, and ask the questions they would like answered,” said Joplin Councilmember, Joshua Bard.

Joplin’s “Council in the Park" takes place once every quarter. The next one is scheduled for Monday, April 14th at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
