ST. LOUIS - Missouri and Illinois are preparing for a major winter storm this weekend. Due to the storm's severity, it has been officially named.

According to The Weather Channel, the weather service names high-impact storms for both regional and national-scale events. As with hurricanes, the weather service uses a similar method when naming large winter storms based on certain thresholds.

The Weather Channel named this weekend's storm Blair according to their 2024-2025 winter storm name list.

According to the American Meteorological Society, the criteria for naming a winter storm is based on information from the National Weather Service Winter Storm Warnings if at least two million people are under those warnings or if it covers more than 255 miles.

The Weather Channel does not name lake-effect snowstorms or pure arctic cold outbreaks, according to their website.

The first winter storm of the 2024-2025 season was named Anya, which covered the southwestern region of the country in early November. Colorado and New Mexico saw the bulk of Anya's heavy snow.

Across Missouri and Illinois, a mixture of snow and ice is expected to impact the region starting Saturday night, all day on Sunday, and potentially into Monday morning.
