Hazmat cleanup closes I-64 in Illinois nearly all day Friday
A semi-truck carrying peroxide overturned on westbound I-64 Thursday, causing a peroxide leak, a temporary shelter in place order, and traffic disruptions, with westbound lanes expected to reopen Friday evening.
MOUNT VERNON, Ill. -- A semi-truck carrying peroxide overturned on westbound I-64 Thursday near the I-57/I-64 split, prompting a major cleanup and traffic disruptions. The accident caused a peroxide leak, leading to a temporary shelter in place order that has since been lifted.
Westbound lanes of the highway remain closed from the I-57/I-64 split to the Washington County line and are not expected to reopen until Friday evening. Traffic is being detoured at the Mt. Vernon exit 95 of I-57, west to US Highway 51, then north to rejoin I-64. Travelers should anticipate heavy traffic along the detour route, including Illinois Highway 15.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and stay updated on the evolving situation.
