Gov. Parson signs executive order in preparation of winter storm

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has signed an executive order in preparation of a highly anticipated winter storm this weekend.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through late Saturday evening to early Monday morning. Heavy snow, ice, and freezing rain are expected for much of the state and the St. Louis region.

The executive order designates Missouri as being in a "state of emergency" to allocate more resources and waive certain restrictions to prepare for wintry weather.

With the executive order in effect, the Missouri National Guard will be on standby to assist with winter weather response efforts as necessary. It allows for Missouri's adjustant general to activate state militia to assist residents in need.

The executive order also temporarily lifts hours-of-service requirements for truckers transporting heating fuels like propane and natural gas.

"With a hazardous winter storm forecasted for this weekend, we want to be prepared to respond however may be needed," said Parson via a news release. "Missourians should be proactive in their preparations and so too should state government. This Order helps ensure Missourians' homes stay heated and that state government and our National Guard members stand ready to assist. We ask that all Missourians stay aware and use extreme caution during this potentially dangerous winter weather event."

As the winter storm rolls in, people are encouraged to postpone travel for much of Sunday, if possible. For a closer look at MoDOT's preparations, click here.
