SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The new year has arrived and many may be starting their resolutions, including the increasingly popular "Dry January."
For 31 days, "Dry January" invites those of age to give up or replace their drinking habits.
At The Order and Vantage, people can still enjoy a night out for drinks with friends during their month-long break from alcohol.
“I think everybody should be able to enjoy themselves however they choose whether that's with alcohol or without,” said lead bartender Chaz Alderson.
Alderson believes the trend is becoming increasingly popular, especially in the Ozarks.
“It's becoming more and more, I think, known across the country,” Alderson said. “And if you go to bigger markets on the coasts, that's already like an established thing, I think it's just now coming into the Midwest.”
Marijuana, non-alcoholic beers and mocktails are all considered alternatives to alcohol during the month. Alderson created the mocktail menu and believes the beverages should still be high quality.
“We try to base similar flavor profiles off of what we're already doing. So, with syrups and juices and things like that, and we get pretty technical,” Alderson said. “Especially with a lot of companies that are making non-alcoholic spirits, we have more options to give people more than just like juice in a glass, essentially.”
While reasons behind participating in the challenge vary between improved sleep, healthier skin or even more energy, some are just looking for a fresh start.
“I think mocktails and sobriety are very important. I think people should take breaks from all kinds of vices. So I think this is perfect,” Alderson said.
Since it is the beginning of a new year, some say that you should give yourself some grace when trying something new.
“I would say stick with it. Everybody does these new year's resolutions and don't get down on yourself,” Devin Eskra, a "Dry January" supporter said. “If you make a mistake, slip up on something. You know, if you have a drink in Dry January, don't drink for the rest of January, just get back at it.”
