ST. LOUIS – Temperatures may have been in the mid-20s Tuesday, but that didn’t stop St. Louisans from participating in the time-honored tradition of sledding on Art Hill in Forest Park.

If there were a St. Louis passport, surely you would have to get it stamped for heading to Art Hill after a big snowstorm.

Sledders of all ages and sizes braved the cold temperatures and probable ice patches to prove they’ve taken part.

As always, a word of caution for those braving the cold for the next few days: beware of frostbite and hypothermia.

"Frostbite is when the skin or the tissue actually freezes,” Dr. Henry Young, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, said. “Hypothermia is when our body gets so cold that it is unable to maintain that internal core temperature."

Since the body tries to keep its core organs heated, it will shift blood from skin, hands, nose, ears, and cheeks, thus causing frostbite.

One other thing to avoid? The Grand Basin, once the heart of the 1904 World’s Fair, located at the bottom of Art Hill.
