2 dead in wrong-way crash on I-64 in O’Fallon, Illinois
Two people are dead following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in O’Fallon, Illinois, forcing the closure of eastbound lanes at mile marker 19.
O’FALLON. Ill. — Two people are dead following a two-vehicle crash overnight on Interstate 64 in O’Fallon, Illinois, forcing the closure of eastbound lanes at mile marker 19.
According to Trooper Shannon Barrea, an Illinois State Police spokesperson, the crash happened just after 3:20 a.m.
State police said a Lexus traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes struck a Ford head-on. The dense fog may have also been a contributing factor in the crash.
Emergency responders had to extricate at least two victims from the wreckage. The driver of the Ford died at the scene. The driver of the Lexus was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed at exit 19. State police redirected drivers off the interstate for the duration of the on-site investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
